Charlie McCray, a master builder and beloved member of the Chicagoland community, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 26, 2024, at the age of 91. Born on April 16, 1933, in Bolton, Mississippi, to George and Alberta McCray, Charlie was the youngest of their children.
He began his life's journey at Tye Water M. B. Church and Robinson Elementary School in Bolton. A hard worker from a young age, Charlie left school after sixth grade to support his family. His strong work ethic led him to a variety of roles, from the railroad to pool table assembly, before finding his calling as a foreman at Bell & Howell and ultimately as a master carpenter.
While at Bell & Howell, he met his devoted wife of over 40 years, Annie McCray. Together they built a life in Chicago, commuting long distances to work until the company's closure. This marked a turning point for Charlie, allowing him to dedicate himself fully to his carpentry business. He became a renowned builder in the Chicagoland area, designing and constructing countless garages and home additions, leaving a lasting impact on hundreds of families.
Charlie was a pillar of Pleasant Green M. B. Church, where he served tirelessly in numerous capacities. He was a dedicated Deacon, President of the Trustee Board, a founding member of the Singing Churchmen, and a driving force on the Finance Team. His skills as a builder were invaluable to the church, contributing to a plethora of projects under the leadership of Rev. Steve C. Chew and Rev. Ray C. Bonney.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Annie, three brothers, Willie
C., John Henry, and Ben Allen, and three sisters, Lureatha Fleming, Anner Lee Walton, and Marlene McDonald.
He is survived by his four daughters: Urounda Brooks, Tanyce A. McCray-Davis (Charles), Aretha L. Pratt, and Armica McCray; six sisters:
Isabella Jones, Ollie B. Powell, Jether Mac Clay, Mollie Bell McCray, Rosa Lee Wilson (Dallas), and Lucy Smith; seven grandchildren; one grandgodson; six great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends who will cherish his memory.
